Martha Frances Hall was born in 1837 to James Wesley and Catherine Claypool Hall in Menard County, Illinois. She first married William Banks England in 1853. He was subsequently killed in the Battle of Chickamauga while serving with the 115th Illinois Infantry in 1863. Three of their children survived to adulthood: Laura, Hettie Ann and William. A daughter, Kitte Daisy from her second marriage to Capt. Thomas A. Swaringuin, died at age 19. Martha died in 1902 and is buried in Hall Cemetery at Athens, Illinos.
