Richard married Sarah A. (Shepard) Wilkinson (1816 - 14 Feb 1864). In the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Censuses, they lived in Washington, DC, and Richard had no occupation (1850) and was a "carpenter" (1860).

"Suddenly on the 29th ult. Near Charlotte Hall Post Office, St. Mary's county, Maryland, Richard Wilkinson in the 60th year of his age, a native of England but for the last 39 years a resident of this city. He leaves a family of ten children to mourn his untimely end. May he rest in peace. His funeral will take place at 3 o'clock on Saturday the 7th inst. from the residence of his son-in-law, William Fullalove, south C street between 2d and 3d east, Capitol Hill."
