Socrates T. Best was born July 15, 1825, died in 1896, and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Prairie Farm, Barron County, Wisconsin. His gravestone is inscribed "Socrates T. Best 1824 - 1932." The gravestone of his wife Sarah is inscribed "Sarah M. Best 1837 - 1932." Another gravestone in the family plot is inscribed "Father Allie L. Best 1880 - 1933."
Socrates was married twice with his first marriage to E. Frances Langson. She died November 5, 1864 near Dardanelle, Arkansas: Their children were:

Augustus L. born 4 Apr 1854, in Adams Co., Wis.
William J. 1861, in Texas.

In about 1866, Socrates was united in marriage to Mrs. Sarah Landt. She was born in 1837 in Illinois, daughter of a father born in New York and a mother born in Connecticut. She died in 1932, place unknown, and was buried next to the remains of her husband in Evergreen Cemetery. Their known children, as listed in the 1880 U.S. Census, were:

Judith 1867, in Wisconsin.
Samuel 1871, in Wisconsin.
Sylvia 1874, in Wisconsin.
Mildred 1879, in Wisconsin.
Allie L. 1880, in Wisconsin.

This was the second marriage for Sarah. Her first marriage was to ______ Landt. His vital statistics are unknown, other then that he was born in Illinois. Their one known child was:

Waren Landt born 1864.

In the 1880 U.S. Census, Socrates Best was listed as a 55 year old farmer living in Sheridan Township, Dunn County, Wisconsin, with his 45 year old wife Sarah and his and their children: Alona, age 21; William, age 19; Judith, age 13; Samuel, age 9; Sylvia, age 6; and 1 year old Mildred Best. Also listed with the family was his 16 year old stepson, Warren Landt, born in Wisconsin, son of a father born in Wisconsin and a mother born in Illinois.
In the 1890 U.S. Census, Socrates T. Best was listed as living in New Haven Township, Dunn County, Wisconsin and as having served as a Private in Company B of the 2nd Kansas Cavalry form January 2, 1863 to August 17, 1865 for total service of 2 years, 7 months and 15 days.

Socrates was a Civil War veteran who enlisted January 2, 1863, at Elm Springs, Arkansas, to serve three years as a Private in Company A of the 2nd Kansas Cavalry. In the Company Descriptive Book he was listed as a 37 years old, 5'10" tall school teacher, with dark hair, gray eyes and a dark complexion, born in Portage County, Ohio.

On February 13, 1863, Socrates entered The U.S. General Hospital at Springfield, Missouri. On the muster roll of May/June, 1863, he was noted to be present with Company A. On the muster roll of July/August and Sep./Oct, 1863, he was listed as absent on detached service by S.O. No. 151, H.Q. District S.W. Missouri, dated August 6, 1863. That service consisted of recruiting duty in Arkansas with the Regimental Headquarters from August to December, 1863. On the muster roll of Nov./Dec., 1863, he was listed as absent and had furnished his own horse and equipment since October 1, 1863. On Special service as nurse in General Hospital by S.O. No. 44, H.Q. District of the Frontier. At General Hospital, Fort Smith, Arkansas. Due $100.00 bounty.

On the muster roll of July/August, 1864, of the General Hospital, Fort Smith, Arkansas, it was noted that Socrates was Acting Hospital Steward since August 9, 1864. On the Ft. Smith Hospital muster roll of Nov./Dec., 1864, it was noted that he was sick in the hospital. On the Company B muster roll of March/April, 1865, it was noted that he was transferred to Company B by S.O. No. 96, H.Q., District Arkansas, dated April 21, 1865. On June 22, 1865, Socrates was mustered out of Federal service with Company B at Fort Gibson, Indian Territory. On the muster out roll it was noted that he was 37 years of age, due $6.61 of his clothing allowance and his $100.00 enlistment bounty. He was also listed as having been present at the Battle of Ponyville, August 29, 1863, and the Battle of Devil's Backbone, Arkansas, September 1, 1863.

On September 5, 1890, Socrates T. Best filed Application No. 934,060, for an Invalid Veteran's Pension, of which there is no record of Approval at the National Archives. On July 20, 1896, Sarah M. Best filed Application No. 637,965, for a Widow's Pension, of which there is no record of approval at the National Archives.
