William Douglas Cary (Doug) died Feb. 27, 2009, of natural causes. He was born Feb. 14, 1922, in Ida, Texas, to Jesse and Edna Cary on the family farm, where he weighed in at 12 pounds, 13 ounces on the kitchen flour scale.

Doug grew up farming cotton and corn with his family until the call of World War II, when he joined the US Army. He took his initial training in Biloxi, Miss., and from there rode a troop train to Fort William Henry Harrison in Helena for additional training. One weekend he walked into a small cafe popular with the soldiers called the Nugget Lunch, where he met the owner's daughter, Freda Mae Anders. Doug was transferred to Fort Lewis in Washington to prepare to ship out overseas. Before he shipped out he sent for Freda Mae to come to Tacoma and become his bride, and on Nov. 6, 1943, they were married. A few days later Doug was sent to the Pacific where he served in Okinawa and Oahu, Hawaii, driving ammo trucks in convoy. Doug was always a defender of veterans rights and a proud member of the Disabled American Veterans. He proudly wore his familiar DAV cap wherever he went.

After the war he returned to his beloved Freda Mae, and together they settled in Helena, where they raised their four children. Doug was a great storyteller to his children and could make "Goldie Locks and the Three Bears" come alive with exciting drama. He loved to sing and often serenaded Freda Mae. He loved to sing the old Baptist hymns he learned at church growing up in Texas. He could always be relied upon when a grandchild needed a ride to or from school and "gramma and grampa's" house was their second home, night or day.

Doug loved growing anything that produced a seed, from the best sweet corn in the county to his popular sweet peas, of which he gladly would send home a bouquet with any summer visitor who came by. Doug loved to visit old friends, and he never met a stranger. Doug was a reliable friend and was often called upon when someone was in need of anything.

Doug worked for many years for the Great Northern Railway at the warehouse in Helena as a freight clerk until his debilitating back injury forced an early retirement.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Edsell and Ersell Cary; his wife, Freda Mae; and grandson, Jess Douglas Forbes. He is survived by his son, Richard (Vickie) Cary of Helena; daughters, Stavona Perkins of Deer Park, Wash., Claudene (Steve) Carkeek of Helena, and Wanda (Bill) Forbes of Somers; grandchildren, Tina (Gary) Boswell, Claudene Lyon, Rich Cary, Ryan Cary, Robin (Craig) Kockler, Julie (Charles) Gallagher, Cathy (Josh) Reynolds, Cindy (Josh) Ryckman, Michelle Carkeek, Chantal (Rick) Hammers, Melissa (Bob) Martin, Cristina Carkeek, and Carlos Milton Carkeek; 18 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.

Special thanks to Rosetta House, Cooney Home, Fort Harrison VA Hospital, and Hospice of St. Peter's. Donations may be made in Doug's name to Liberty House; P.O. Box 167, Fort Harrison, MT 59636 or to Hospice of St. Peter's.

Services will be held Friday, March 6, at 11 a.m. at the East Valley Foursquare Church, 708 E. Groschell, East Helena. Hagler- Anderson is in charge of arrangements.
