From census records:

In 1850 Artemas, 26, was boarding with Benjamin and Keziah Rugg at Gardner, Massachusetts. He was a rattan worker.

Five years later he was residing with his sister, Lucy, & her husband, Amasa Whitney, at Gardner. Mr. Coolidge earned a paycheck splitting cane.

On May 19th 1857 Artemas, 33, married his wife, Susan Clapp, 19, in Gardner. He was recorded as a mechanic on their marriage record.

Mr. and Mrs. Coolidge, in 1860, were enumerated in Gardner at the same house or apartment building as Susan's first cousin, Waldo E. Clapp, and his wife, Sarah. Both gentleman were employed in the cane business. The Coolidge children at home were: Charles M., 2, and Hattie A., five months.

Artemas was a teamster in 1865. In 1870 he was simply listed as a laborer. His wife had given birth to a third child, Fred, in 1867.

By 1880 Mr. Coolidge had begun farming. His two oldest children were young adults. Charles, 21, took a job in a cane shop and Hattie, 19, was a store clerk.

In 1900 Artemas and Susan were residing on Green Street in Gardner. Looking at the streets visited by the census taker just before and after the Coolidges' house it seems they probably lived on the section of Green Street, that today, is up past the Mount Wachusett Community College and turns into Route 140. Their three children had all moved out. At age seventy-six Artemas did not have an occupation listed.

Mr. Coolidge died in 1903. His widow could not be located in the 1910 census. In 1920 she was living at the home she owned at 91 Woodland Avenue in Gardner with her daughter, Hattie. At that time she was renting out part of her house to Frank and Lillian Houghton.
