Grace Matthews Benefiel Curry was the daughter of Joseph and Malinda Matthews. She attended East Paradise Township school and grew up on the family farm about 1 mile north of Etna, IL.

She married Etna native Frederick William Benefiel in June, 1923. She had two infant children who died at birth in 1925 and 1927. She had one son, Robert Joseph, born in 1929 who lived to adulthood. Bob gave her seven grandchildren.

Fred Benefiel died in November, 1932. To say she was a homemaker is an understatement - it included gathering eggs, taking care of chickens, pigs, and a cow, and all the other rotten hand-labor jobs in a home that had no running water.

Grace was also a seamstress in a factory in Neoga, IL, and later a school cook at the Etna School. When that school closed, she transferred to the new Elementary School where she was the head cook in Neoga, IL. Needless to say, she was an excellent cook!

She married Earl W. Curry in April, 1968. They enjoyed retirement in Etna on the same land she and Fred bought back in 1923 (but in a new home Earl built for her) until she became ill in 1984. She moved to the Odd Fellowes-Rebecka Home in Mattoon, IL. She died there in May, 1986.

"I told you kids forty-leven times, don't go mussin'up the rug in the front room."

Grammie spoiled us grandkids rotten. Oh, what I wouldn't give for a piece of her blackberry cobbler right now, with some Cool Whip she kept in the "deep freeze."
