Wenzel served in the U.S. Civil War as a Private in Company D, 13th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, United States Army. During his time in the Army he experienced service in Huntsville, Alabama, and guarded the Memphis & Charleston Railroad from Huntsville to Stevenson, Alabama, with headquarters at Brownsboro till November. His unit repulsed General John Bell Hood's attack on Decatur, Alabama, October 26-29. Garrisoned at Stevenson, Alabama until December, then to Huntsville, Alabama until March 1865. Operations in East Tennessee March 15 to April 22. The 13th Wisconsin was at Nashville, Tennessee until June. He was discharged June 15, 1865 and his unit was ordered to New Orleans the next day.
