A rattle of musketry and the mellow notes of "taps" from a legion bugle marked the passing of Minnesota's oldest Civil war veteran.

The veteran was Daniel Wilcox, a pioneer of the prairie schooner days, who would have observed the 101st anniversary of his birth had he lived to July 23.

"Old Dan" was buried as he had always desired—a military funeral. The "boys" of the Roser and Norrross post of the American Legion were there to fulfill his wishes.

The veteran died at the home of his son, Robert Wilcox, of Norcross, Saturday. Funeral services were conducted here and burial was in Lakeside cemetery, Herman, Minn.

The death of Mr. Wilcox leaves the title of oldest Civil war veteran of Minnesota to Charles Metz of St. Paul, who observed his 100th birthday last week.

The veteran was born in Mercer county, Pennsylvania, July 23, 1825 and moved to Illinois with his parents when he was 8 years old settling near the site now known as Princeton.

He met Almeda Stryker and in 1848 they were married. She died in 1895 leaving four sons and four daughters six of whom survive.

When 39 years old, Mr. Wilcox joined I Company Sixth Iowa Cavalry and served through the campaign. He was mustered out of service Oct 17, 1865.

After the war he became a member of the G R post at Eagle Grove, Iowa where he lived up to 1905, when he came here to live with his son.

Mr. Wilcox is also survived by 19 grandchildren. 33 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren, one of whom is in high school.
