After graduation from 5th Avenue High School in Pittsburgh, he went to work and eventually formed Automotive Supply Commune with his brother, Phil, and then moved to Johnstown, PA. In 1944 the family moved to Tucson where he joined with other local Jewish families and became a founder and benefactor of Congregation Anshei Israel, the Tucson Jewish Community Center, and the Hebrew Free Loan.

He led the effort to form the Handmaker Jewish Nursing Home for the Aged, named in his honor, the forerunner of Handmaker Jewish Services for the Aged, a nationally recognized institution devoted to the non-sectarian and non-profit care of the elderly.

After the death of his wife, Mae, he married Ida Roberts who survives him. He is also survived by his daughter, Sara Block of Tucson and his son, Hirsch of Phoenix; sisters, Jean Sparks of Atlantic City, NJ and Mary Supowitz Cooperman of Tucson as well as seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

His daughter, Grace, preceded him in death in 1976.
