When President Lincoln's call for troops when out the 5th PA Infantry (The First Defenders) Brumm enlisted for 3 months and was commissioned First Lieutenant in Company E. After being mustered out he enlisted 9 September 1861 with other members of Company C, 50th PA Infantry and was then Commissioned as First Lieutenant of company C. On 17 May 1864 Brumm was promoted to Captain and given command of F Company. On 19 May 1865 he was promoted to Major in the 50th and was mustered out on 30 July 1865.
George Washington Brumm was born in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, son of George Reinhardt and Salome Zemholdt Gernholt Brumm. He is the brother of Charles Napoleon Brumm, Congressman from Pennsylvania.
