He married June 5, 1891 in Painesville, Jean (Jennie) MURPHY the daughter of Patrick MURPHY and Margaret DELANEY. They had three daughters and a son. Jennie died June 7, 1947 at age 77 after fracturing her hip.

* William J. APPLETON died 14 Jan 1962 and his wife, Virgel I (MEREDITH) APPLETON died 11 March 1961 with both buried in Riverside Cemetery, Painesville.
* Mrs Margaret (Clare H.) VALENTINE died in 1989, her husband Clare H. VALENTINE died 1964; both buried in Riverside Cemetery, Painesville, Ohio.
* Mrs. Laura (John J.) BARNES died in April 23, 1986 at age 90 at home in Painesville; buried with her husband in St. Mary Cemetery, Painesville, Ohio.
Patrick was a member of the Painesville police force from when the city was incorporated in 1903 and was police chief from 1905 to 1939. He became chief after leading in competitive examinations and proving his police ability in a practical demonstration.
The Cleveland Press reported that "Shortly after he joined the force, a fatal stabbing occurred near his home. Without knowing that the sheriff's department and other city police were on the trail of the killer, Mr. APPLETON tracked him down and had him in jail several hours before other officers knew he had been apprehended."
Patrick's funeral was at St. Mary's Church. He and Jean were both buried in St Mary Cemetery, Painesville, Ohio in where his parents and sons Johnnie and Joseph were also buried.
