US Navy Lieutenant. Wadsworth joined the US Navy as a midshipman in 1799. He served during the Quasi-War with France and in the first two expeditions against Tripoli in 1801 and 1802. He volunteered to join the crew of the "Intrepid" whose mission was to destroy the pirate floatilla in Tripoli harbor. On September 4, 1804, while carrying out this mission, the "Intrepid" exploded killing Wadsworth and 12 other men aboard. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, his nephew, was named in his honor.
