About 1882 he and his cousin William Andrew Luce visited their Luce cousins in Hancock County, IL, while there Charles met his future wife, Mary E. Abercrombie, who was boarding with the Thomas Luce family in Sonora Township. They were married 22 March 1883, in her mother's home, Riverside Mansion, in Nauvoo. They moved to Herington, KS. In 1891 they moved to Kansas City, MO where they operated a livestock agency and confectionery store.
