Mom grew up in Minersville, Utah during the great depression. She moved to Salt Lake City during WWII and worked at the Meredith Café. She moved back to Beaver and while working as a waitress at the Dew Drop Inn Café she met Gerald Staley Nowers, who had returned from WWII and was working as a Beaver City policeman, a position he held for 42 years. They were married on July 11, 1947 in Pioche, Nevada, and later sealed for time and all eternity in the St. George Temple on July 6, 1963.
During our childhood mom worked at Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph where she worked for many years. Mom was working at the Phone company when the Atomic Bombs were set off at the Nevada Test Site. She often commented about watching the bomb reaction out of the phone company window, a site she will never forget. Mom was the last operator in Beaver to run the switchboard before the rotary dial phones. She then went back to waitressing at the Elite, Emil's & El Bambi Cafes. After waitressing she went to work at the sewing factory where she retired.
Mom was a faithful member of the LDS Church. She held many callings such as Relief Society Counselor, Mutual and Primary teachers. She was active in the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, and the Business & Professional Women's Club of which she served as President before it changed to the Beaver Betterment Club. Her passions were sewing and reading, she always had a book in her hand.
You could see mom and dad on the farm or driving out on the range to check on the cattle. Mom and dad enjoyed riding in the Beaver Mountains, the Grove, or the field lanes, they were always together until daddy's death in March of 2005.
Mom has been blessed with 22 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren and 2 great-great-great grandchildren. All because two people fell in love! Her son and several grandsons have served honorably in the military, currently 2 grandsons will be going to Iraq in a few weeks, with the Triple Deuce 222nd.
She is survived by her children: Denna Ann (Larry) Kramer, St. George, Utah, Geraldine (John) Cummings Richland, Washington, Wilson Gates (Cindy) Nowers, Richfield, Utah, Michelle (Greg) Smith, St. George, Utah.
Mom is preceded in death by her loving husband and eternal companion of 64 years, Gerald, her parents, brothers Wayne Lloyd Mathews, Wallace LeGrand Mathews, in-laws Seldon & Delia Nowers, brother-in-law Shorty Nowers and sister-in-law Margaret Boyle.
