"At this time Papa had a job at the flour mill as engineer... Then in July 1909 I went with Mrs. McCoy as a helper in the cook-shack with the threshing crew. I was at home on a Sunday and borrowed Brother Albert's little round mirror. He had been at the mill, helping Papa push the railroad cars; he slipped and bumped his knee on the rail. When I saw him he asked for his looking glass. I promised to bring it back. He was a bit feverish. Then on Tuesday my parents sent for me to come home, when I got there he knew me for just a moment, asked for his looking glass and I gave it to him. Dr. Thompson called Dr. Mayberry of Enid to come help him. They operated on his leg but it was so gangrenous and at 9:00 PM he passed away. Papa was so broken hearted over losing both his sons he did not want to stay there. We had the funeral and that was in the North Enid Mennonite Brethren Church and the burial in that church cemetery."
