At his home near Oak Island, Bexar County, Tex., August 17, 1884; Rev. P. Eldridge, aged 87 years, 5 months, 7 days. The deceased lived a life of high character, and was honored, esteemed and respected by all who knew him. He was a devoted Christian, an affectionate husband and father, and lived a useful and influential life. He had long been a member of the Baptist Church, and was highly esteemed in all the country 'round about for his honest and upright life. He met death calmly, and we trust he is now at rest with God. He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his loss; but his influence and example are not dead and as the years shall come and go, generations will rise up to call him blessed. May we who remain prepare to meet him on the other shore, where parting is no more.

It is said that the Father of Peter was a Sea Captain, who with his two brothers and their families came from Scotland or Ireland to Maryland and settled there about the time of the Revolutionary War. Captain Eldredge and family moved to Georgia, where Peter Eldredge was born in 1780. When about 18 years of age Peter was converted and licensed to preach by a regular or missionary Baptist Church.
