Coming as a shock to the entire county and a very distinct shock to his hundreds of personal friends, was the news flashed this morning (Thursday) that Raphael Sebastian Leonard died in the Grants Pass.
Mr. Leonard suffered a severe heart attack two weeks ago and was rushed to the hospital where it was thought he was progressing satisfactorily, and his family had hoped to have him home before long, but he went to sleep Wednesday night and never woke up. Raphael Leonard was born on the Leonard ranch, located on Sucker creek, about six miles from Cave Junction on the Holland road, October 29, 1889, and was 54 years old. He had lived all his life on this ranch, and when his mother passed away, he was made trustee of the estate and brought the ranch into production as one of the best in the Illinois valley.
He was Past Master of Belt Lodge No. 18, A. F. & A. M., was the lodge secretary for many years and at the time of his death was Associate Patron of Western Star Chapter, O. E. S.
Leaving to mourn his loss are his widow, Jessie May Leonard; one son, Gordon R. Leonard; one brother, Frank T. Leonard of West Springfield, Mass., and one sister, Mrs. Mercedes Lewis of Randall, Washington. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon, March 29th at 2 p. m. in the Cave Junction Community church, Rev. George H. Gray officiating. At the grave side, full Masonic services will be held, under auspices of Belt Lodge I No. 18. Interment will be at the I. O. O. F. cemetery.
