News Chronicle, Jan 30, 2000. Father Alan Donald Scheible, O. Praem., age 57, a member of the Norbertine Community of St. Norbert Abbey, De Pere, Wis, entered into God's eternal kingdom on January 30, 2000. Father Scheible was born on January 10, 1943, in Racine, Wis., to Dorothy (Wemmert) and Bernard Scheible. His home parish is Annunciation Parish, Green Bay, Wis. Father Scheible graduated from Premontre High School in 1961 as Valedictorian of his class and St. Norbert College, De Pere, Wis., in June 1966 with a B.A. in Philosophy. Further education includes a Licentiate in Sacred Theology, Heythrop College, England; Course Work and Comprehensive Examinations in preparation for beginning Doctoral Dissertation in Judaeo-Christian Studies; Master of Arts in Scripture, Chicago Theological Seminary; and Spirituality and Worship Institute at Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, Calif. Father Scheible entered St. Norbert Abbey, De Pere, on August 28, 1961, where he was vested as a novice. He professed Solemn Vows in August of 1966 and was ordained to the Priesthood on September 12, 1969. Father Scheible served as both Associate Pastor and Pastor of St. Willebrord Parish, Chicago; Pastor of St. Francis de Paula, Chicago; Associate Pastor of St. Dorothy Parish, Chicago; and Administrator of the former St. Boniface Parish, De Pere. In each of these parishes he had the difficult task of closing or merging them. He did so with efficiency yet tact. Other assignments include Instructor, St. Norbert College; Manuscripts Cataloguer and Grant Writer, Lutheran School of Theology, Chicago; Supervisor of Lay Ministry Training Programs; Consultant for the Office of Planning, Archdiocese of Milwaukee; President and Business Manager, St. Willebrord Catholic High School, Chicago; and AIDS Ministry, Bonaventure House, Chicago. On July 1, 1997, Father Scheible was Scheible was appointed as Director of the Norbertine Center for Spirituality, St. Norbert Abbey, where he served until his death. Through his dedicated work he increased the amount and diversity of the Center's services. Of note was the implementation of a three-year program to train Spiritual Directors, the only such site in Northeastern Wisconsin. In Father Scheible's final months, it was difficult for his family, friends, and confreres to see the gradual diminishment of his keen intellect and profound insight. He faced his day to day encounter with brain cancer with courage and equanimity. May he rest in peace. Father Scheible is survived by the members of the Norbertine Community; his parents, two sisters, two brothers; one niece; aunts and uncles; cousins; and many close friends. The Reception of the Body/Vespers of the Dead will be held at St. Norbert Abbey, on Wednesday, February 2, at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will follow until 9:00 p.m. and will continue on Thursday, February 3, from 8:00 until 4:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Abbey Church on Thursday, February 3, at 4:30 p.m. Rt. Rev. E. Thomas De Wane, O.Praem., Abbot of St. Norbert Abbey, will preside at the funeral liturgy. Burial will be in the St. Norbert Abbey Cemetery. Ryan Funeral Home, De Pere, is in charge of the arrangements. Donations may be in Father Alan's name to the Nobertine Center for Spirituality of which his last years were so devoted.
