Lawrence Preston Ambrose, 80, of Hagerstown, passed away Monday, August 10, 2009, at the Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 16, 1929, in Beaver Creek, he was the son of the late John Wesley & Emma Elizabeth (Mullenix) Ambrose.

Mr. Ambrose was a 1947 graduate of Smithsburg High School and then continued his education at Hagerstown Junior College. He was a licensed pilot; a member of BPOE 378; a representative for the Maryland Department of Tourism; a charter member of the Beaver Creek Country Club; and past member of the Fountain Head Country Club.

For many years, Mr. Ambrose owned and operated a number of automobile dealerships in the Hagerstown area. He later began a second career as a sales engineer in hydraulics and pneumatics.

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Jean Elizabeth (Adams) Ambrose; a sister, Ethel Needy of Hagerstown; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown.
