Anselm married Monika on June 15, 1919 in Strausburg, North Dakota, where they owned a small farm.
They had 4 girls and 1 boy: Evelyn, Leo, Maggie, Rose, and Floretta.
They also had another daughter, Edwina/Ivina (who died young), and a stillborn son.
He never learned how to speak English and would have his wife translate it for him into German.
