She was one of thirteen children born to Daniel and Manuelita Valdez. When Her father passed away, she was forced to stop her schooling at the age of 15 to work and help the family. She worked as a housecleaner, a baker at a restaurant and in the cleaning business. When she married her first husband, she moved to NM where her two children were born. After the tragic death of her husband, she and young children moved back to Colorado to live with her mother. She later lived in Salt Lake City, Pueblo, and Trinidad to be close to her children. She was active in church clubs and enjoyed quilting, and bingo.
