ERVA FRANCES WHITE
Feb. 16, 1921 - June 25, 2011

SALEM - Erva Frances White died at Salem Hospital on June 25, 2011. Erva was born on Feb. 16, 1921 in Oregon City, Oregon. Her parents were Chester Ervin and Kathryn Elizabeth Carothers, lifelong residents of Oregon City. Erva graduated from Oregon City High School in 1938, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, Job's Daughters and the Girls Rifle Club. She then attended Oregon State University in Corvallis and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secretarial Science in 1942. In her senior year at college she met and dated Douglas C. White, who graduated that same year from OSU with a degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation, Erva worked as a secretary for Publisher Paper Co. in Oregon City. In 1943 Doug & Erva were married. In 1944 Doug enlisted in the Navy and later that same year Erva gave birth to their first child, Daniel Douglas White. In 1946 Doug returned from the war effort and started work with Portland General Electric, where he remained until his retirement. Erva & Doug lived in Oregon City until Doug was promoted to the Willamette Valley Division in Salem, where he would become Manager of Engineering and Construction. With the exception of one year spent in Schenectady, New York and two years in West Linn, Oregon; they raised four children and lived the rest of their lives together in Salem. Erva served for many years on the Board of Directors for the Salem Women's Bowling Association and served 12 years as Secretary for two leagues. After Doug's retirement in 1983, Erva & Doug traveled extensively: St Croix, Virgin Islands, Tahiti, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, eastern United States and Canada. Erva's hobbies were sewing, handwork and cooking. She continued her membership in Eastern Star and enjoyed playing cards with her many friends in the Salem area. Erva also enjoyed the companionship of several pet dogs throughout her lifetime, including her most recent companion "Chewy".

Erva was preceded in death by her father and mother; her son Dan, who died in 1988 at the age of 43; and by her husband Doug, who died in 2008 at the age of 89. Erva is survived by her sister, Norma Elizabeth Benski; daughter, Sally Barnett; sons, Jim & John White; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

At Erva's request there will be no funeral or memorial service. Erva will be remembered by family and friends as a firm decision-maker with a soft heart. She was extremely proud and supportive of all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Because of Erva's love and hope for children and her love of dogs, remembrances to any children's or animal charities would be appreciated. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
