Emery J. Fortney
Emery John Fortney, 75, a resident of Bowden, the Alpena community, passed away at 6:40 p.m. Monday, April 26, 2004, in the Winchester, Va., Medical Center where he had been a patient for 20 days. He had been in failing health for the past two years.
Born on Aug. 19, 1928, in Mill Creek, he was the son of the late Norvel and Lena Johnson Fortney.
In September 1948, he was united in marriage to the former Geraldine VanPelt, who survives at Alpena.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Virginia Carol Cross and husband, Clyde, of Kearneysville, Dorothy Ray and husband, Jacob, of Petersburg, Rosemary Ray and husband, Jack, of Dailey, and Connie Pevarnik and husband, Tim, of Martinsburg; one son, Michael Fortney, and wife, Kristy, of Harman; and one brother, Marshall Fortney, and wife, Karen, of Dailey.
Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were one sister, Freda Taylor; and seven brothers, Charlie, Kermit, James, Jessie, Mason, Alvie and Sherman Fortney.
Mr. Fortney retired from the city of Leesburg, Va., and Dulles Airport, where he worked in the maintenance departments.
He was a United Methodist by faith.
Friends will be received after 6 p.m. today at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner Chapel at 1 p.m. Saturday with Pastor Curlie Ray of the Abundant Life Christian Center and the Rev. Walter Blough, retired minister from the Church of the Brethren, officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman. The F.E. Runner Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Emery John Fortney.
