John was born December 6, 1832, at Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, son of John D. and Lucinda or Sarah Lent, both born in the state of New York. He died March 1, 1912, at 210 E. Grand Avenue, Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, aged about 79 years, 2 months and 25 days, and his remains were transported to Rice Lake, Barron County, Wisconsin, and buried there in Nora Cemetery. His military style gravestone is inscribed "John D. Lent Co. C. 7 Pa. Cav."

John was married twice, with his first marriage May 20, 1854, to Sarah Keziah Catlin, at the home of her father in Catlin's Hollow, Tioga County, New York. She died April 9, 1901, place unknown. Children is any, unknown. In about 1868, John reportedly deserted Sarah and moved to the vicinity of Bloomer, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, where he worked in a saw mill. No record of divorce was found by the Bureau of Pensions in any of the locations that John had known to have lived.

On July 3, 1871, John was united in marriage to Julia A. Chase, by H. A. Wentz, at the home of her father at Bloomer, Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Julia was born in in August 1845, in Ohio, daughter of a father born in Illinois and amother born in Ohio. Her date and place of death is unknown. Their children listed on a form filed July 11, 1898, with the Bureau of Pensions, and all born in Wisconsin, were:

When John was asked by the Bureau of Pensions to provide proof of his date of birth, a relative provided that information from his parent's family Bible. John's date of birth and that of his brothers and sisters as listed in that Bible were:

In the 1880 U.S. Census, John D. Lent was listed as a 31 year old laborer living in Rice Lake, Barron County, Wisconsin, with his 29 year old wife Jullia and their three children: 9 year old Louis E, 6 year old Lucinda R. and 2 year old George A. Lent.

In the 1890 U.S. Census, Special Schedule, John D. Lent was listed as living in the City of Rice Lake, Barron County, Wisconsin, and as having served as a private in Company C of the 7th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry, from February 11, 1862 to June 17, 1865, for total service of 2 years, 9 months and 6 days. It was noted that he was suffering from chronic diarrhea and piles.

In the 1900 U.S. Census, John Lent was listed as a 64 year old well digger living on Stout Street in the City of Rice Lake, Barron County, Wisconsin, with his 54 year old wife Julia A. and their two children, 30 year old Lewis E. Lent and 15 eyar old Sarah E. Lent. They had been married 35 years, owned their house with a mortgage and were the parents of five children of whom one was deceased.

John was a Civil War veteran having enlisted September 9, 1862, at Charleston, Pennsylvania, to serve three years as a Private in the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry. On September 12, 1862, he was mustered into Federal service with Company C, at Troy, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. At that time he received $29.00 of his $100.00 enlistment bounty, and was listed as a 28 year and 8 months old, 5'7" tall farmer, with sandy hair, blue eyes and a sandy complexion, born in Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

On the company muster role of Nov/Dec., 1862, John was listed as absent sick in hospital at Nashville, Tennessee. On the muster roll of Jan/Feb., 1862, it was noted that on November 28, 1863, he had filed his intention to re-enlist, but on the muster roll of May/June, 1864, it was noted that he had not re-enlisted. On the muster role of Nov/Dec., 1864, it was noted that he was in care of extra horses. On the muster roll of May/June, 1865, it was noted that he was absent sick at Nashville, Tennessee. On the Company C Muster Out Roll of August 23, 1865, at Macon, Georgia, it was noted that John had been discharged June 23, 1865, was due $75.00 of his enlistment bounty and was entitled to transportation and subsistence from Nashville, Tennessee, to his place of enrollment.

After his discharge, John returned to Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, residing there until he moved on an unknown date to Bloomer, Chippewa County, Wisconsin. Later he moved to the vicinity of Rice Lake, Barron County, Wisconsin. On an unknown date he moved to Chippewa Falls, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, where he lived out the rest of his days.

On November 5, 1887, John filed Application No. 627,994, for an Invalid Veteran's Pension, which was approved under Certificate No. 518,066. On April 8, 1912, Julia A. Lent filed Application No. 984,117, for a Widow's Pension, which was approved under Certificate No. 757,759.
