Michael was the last of ten children born to Casper Buettner Sr. and Elizabeth Ziegler. He was born and was raised near St. Martin, Stearns County. He married Anna Barbara Kollmann, daughter of Matt Kollmann and Catherine Sauer, in 1894 and lived with their family near Foxholm, North Dakota.

Their children are: John George (Anna Behm) born Jan. 1896, Rosa Barbara b/d 1898, Elinora Mary (-Watson) born May 1899, Henry Gerhart born 1901, Catherine Mary born 1903, Rosina Carolina (-Kalk) born 1905, Nicholas Michael born 1907, Joseph Fred born 1908, Elizabeth Anna (-Thielan) born 1910, Frank Joseph born 1912, Edward John born 1914, Valentine Bernard born 1916 and Marie Julie (-Koros) born 1917.
