Amelia Stumpf's father, Anthony Stumpf, was a successful New York City banker who purchased property on Foster Hill Road, Milford Township, in the 1880s. He built a large farmhouse, which served as the family home and which his wife and Amelia later operated as a boarding house. It was called "The Orchard," for the many fruit trees growing on the property.

In time Amelia met and married Julio C. Santos, a house painter. Their children included longtime farmer in Milford Township, Julio Anthony Santos, as well as his brother John and sister Ottilie.

Because Amelia suffered from Sydenham's chorea, sometimes referred to as "St. Vitus' dance," she was unable to fully care for her children. That role fell largely to an employee at The Orchard, Phebe Davis Bailey, with whom the children remained close throughout their lives.
