Lizzie was one of twelve children born to Silas R. Carey and his wife, Alice L. Hill. She married George Marion Reed, a son of Isaac N. Reed and his wife, Mary A. McClay. George and Lizzie's wedding was on Christmas Day in 1901 in Webb (Clay County), Iowa. They had eight children; three sons and five daughters. Her body was sent from Oregon to Idaho for burial.
