Along with his parents, sister, aunt, and grandparents, John immigrated to America aboard the SS City of London, arriving in New York Harbor on 3 Aug 1868.
He and his family settled in the Smoky Hill area of Kansas soon after arriving in the U.S. and stayed in the area until they had to move to Texas (Victoria County & Williamson County) because of John's ill health. A doctor told Lars and Margta that John would die because of the harsh Kansas winters, and his lungs could only heal if he moved south to warmer climes. The transition did help and John grew healthy again.
He was married in 1897 in Victoria County, Texas, to Loureigner/Lureigner/Louvenier "Lou" Garrett, and moved from Victoria to the Fort Bend/Harris County area between 1900-1903.
John stayed in Texas through the rest of his life, even after his father returned to Kansas with his younger brothers, Carl Paul and Joseph/Josef Edward. He and Lou raised their four children, the youngest of which, Mabel, died young (Find A Grave Memorial# 46284452).
