Samuel was the son of Abram Asper (1830-1862) and Mary Ann Benner (1830 or 1833 OH - 1879) who married on 28 Aug. 1851 in Summit Co., Ohio. Samuel had four younger siblings--Amanda Ellen(b.1854), Aaron (1857-1944), Martin (b.1860), and Hannah (b.1862). I found his family on the 1860 Census living in Union (today the Culver area), Marshall Co., Indiana, where Abram was farming for a living. Abram died two years after that enumeration. I found Mary on the 1870 Census, widowed, still living in Union, with all five children still at home--Samuel, aged 17, Amanda, aged 15, Aaron, aged 13,Martin, aged 10, and Hannah, aged 8. Mary died just shy of the 1880 Census in 1879.

On 18 Aug. 1878, Samuel married Isabelle Ulery in Marshall Co., Indiana. They had eight children together--Bertha L. (b. Aug. 1879), Rosetta (b.1881), Alice M. (1884-1940), Melvin O. (1886-1956), John H. (1888-1967), Ordessa "Dessie" A. (1890-1972), Arthur Leroy "Roy" (1895-1969) and Emma J. (1896-1992). I found the family on the 1880 Census, living in Union, where Samuel was working as a farm laborer. Only daughter Bertha L. had joined the family, but Samuel's unmarried younger sister Ellen (b.1856) (I believe this is Amanda) and her son Albert (b.1879) were staying with the family.

I caught up with the family on the 1900 Census, still living in Union, where Samuel was still farming for a living. Isabelle reported that all eight of her children were still living. (She confirmed this on the 1910 Census.) Bertha was no longer living at home as she had married Jacob A. Wilson on 23 Aug. 1896 in Marshall Co. and Rosetta had married Charles A. Pettis with whom she had son Jesse E. in 1900, but would remarry on 1 Jul. 1905 to William H. Snider with whom she qould have son Claude E. (b.1907). Samuel and Isabelle had welcomed children Alice, Melvin, John, Dessie, Roy and Emma between 1884 and 1896.

On the 1910 Census, the family was still in Union, but Samuel gave his profession as "laborer / odd jobs". Only the two youngest children, Arthur and Emma were still at home with their parents. Alice had married Charles W. Mikesell on 11 Oct. 1902 in Marshall Co., Melvin had married wife Clara Bell on 2 Sep. 1907 in St. Joseph, Berrien Co., Michigan, John had married Della F. Stayton on Christmas Eve in 1908 in Marshall Co., and Dessie had married James Lavering on 1 Apr. 1909 in Marshall Co.

The 1920 Census still had the family in Union and Samuel gave his occupation as "days work". Daughter Emma had married Roy Swigart on 6 Jan. 1913 in Marshall Co. leaving only Roy at home with his parents.

By the 1930 Census, Union had become the town of Culver, the nest was empty and Samuel gave his occupation as "janitor/church". The 1940 Census still showed them in Culver but both Emma and Roy had moved back in with their parents. Both gave their marital status as married but neither of their spouses appeared with the family on that census. Roy's WWII registration card lists wife Genevieve as a contact and although I could not find their marriage record, a Find A Grave memorial gives her full name as Genevieve "Jennie" Louise Sester and she shares a headstone with Roy, so clearly they were married.

Samuel died three years after that census in 1943 at age 91.

Gravesite Details

In "Old Age Pension Applications Book One" from Aug. 22-Oct.30, 1933 as printed in 'Marshall County Roots and Branches, Vol. 18, No. 3", p. 71 July 1997, Samuel's birth year was listed as 5 Jul. 1853 which conflicts with the year on his headstone.
