Ruth K. Medley Cornell

June 15, 1917 - September 28
Ruth K. Medley CORNELL Passed away in Gig Harbor, September 28. She was 88. She was born Ruth Karin Dahlgren on June 15, 1917, in Seattle, Washington, the daughter of Swedish immigrants. She spent an idyllic childhood with her parents and younger brother Stanley on the shores of Lake Washington in Medina. At an early age, Ruth showed precocious musical talent and became a well-known childhood entertainer in the Seattle area, with performances in voice, piano and tap dance. The family later moved to Seattle, where Ruth attended Garfield High School. During these years, she continued to be active in musical and stage productions. Upon graduation, she began work at the National Bank of Commerce, where she was affectionately known by her colleagues as Dolly. One of them was John Medley, a young WWII veteran from Tennessee, who became her first husband. The young couple made their first home together in Magnolia, where she stayed until the last year of her life. After the birth of her two daughters, Ruth devoted herself solely to her family and community. She offered piano lessons, taught Sunday school, and was active in the Magnolia Garden Club, Camp Fire Girls and other school-related activities. For her many years of contribution, she was awarded the Golden Acorn Award by the Lawton School PTA. After the loss of her first husband, Ruth met and married her neighbor Harry Cornell, also well-known in the community for his many years of service at the Magnolia Post Office. The couple spent nearly thirty happy years together until Harry's passing one year ago. She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn R. Hoppen, Marilyns husband Mark, and her granddaughter Whitney of Gig Harbor, Washington, and her daughter Lori Ann Reinhall and her husband Ulf of Mukwonago, Wisconsin. Private Graveside Services were held at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent on October 3. Remembrances may be made to Franciscan Hospice of Tacoma.
