"He was a farmer all of his life and took much interest in education and promoting the welfare of the community where he lived. He held most of the various township offices including several terms as school director and as justice of the peace.

He was married three times. The first marriage was to Isabella Silliman on April 29, 1826 (b Oct 19 1800, d June 2, 1833). They had four children : Samuel (b Mar 7 1827), Robert (b Apr 29 1828), Alexander (b Apr 4 1830) and James Jr (b May 6, 1833). His second marriage was to Martha E Taylor on March 12, 1835 (1811-1851) and they had seven children : William (died young in 1843), Margaret (died young in 1843), Alvin H (1842-1900), John Q (1844-1907), Thomas (1844-1928), Anna E (1847-1916), and Martha (died 1851 aged 9 months). His third marriage was to Margaret Fullerton (1804-1886) who was a daughter of James Fullerton and Margaret Sharp and a good and caring stepmother to his children."
