HAMPTON - Alma Lee Bumpers, 76, entered her celestial eternal portal on Wednesday, 9:40 a.m., June 29, 2011, at Sentara Careplex Hospital, Hampton, Va.

Alma was born Nov. 29, 1934, in Newport News, Va., where she attended Huntington High School and was a graduate of Thomas Nelson Community College. She received her LPN license and selected a ministry helping to care for the sick in various hospitals and nursing homes throughout Norfolk, Williamsburg, Hampton and Newport News, Va. Alma was a Deaconess and the Mother of Living Water Tabernacle Baptist Church. In her various capacities as a parent, nurse, Deaconess, and Mother of her church, Alma demonstrated impeccable leadership, mentorship, counseling, and disciplinarian skills as evident by her abilities to manage strong will children, and to facilitate, counsel, and provided assistance/support to incarcerated youths, whom she knew needed a display of GOD's love. Love as Jesus taught. She provided that kind of love that runs from heart to heart and breast to breast.

Alma was preceded in death by her foster mother, Ms. Mannie Jones; and her husband, Mr. Braxton Bumpers who preceded her by five years.

She leaves to cherish her memory and legacy, one sister, Ms. Annie Mitchell; eight children, Ms. Alma Brown, Ms. Charlene Peterson, Ms. Darlene Wilkerson, Mr. Philip L. Newby, Ms. Braxtina Bumpers, Mr. Braxton Bumpers, Ms. Tequietta Newby-Butts and Mr. James Jones. In addition, Alma has 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives, family members, and friends.

Viewing will be from noon to 6 p.m., July 6, 2011, at Cooke Brothers Funeral Chapel, and one hour before the Celebration of Life, which will be held at Cooke Brothers Funeral Chapel, July 7, 2011, at noon. Interment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens, Hampton, Va.
