He was very active in a civic movement to try and wipe out Saloons in Oakland, CA. The group believed that these saloons were nothing but trouble for the city. There are many articles in the Oakland Tribune in which he is referenced and quoted in 1912 and 1913. Articles pertaining to the movement ceased after 1913 with no clear resolution to the initiative.
