U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1839 and commenced to practice law in Richmond, Indiana. He was clerk of the Indiana State House of Representatives in 1842 and a member, (1846-48). In 1849, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first Congress, serving until 1851 and elected to the Thirty-third Congress, serving (1853-55). He moved to Dakota Territory in 1861 and was a member of the Dakota Territorial House of Representatives, (1861-62). Moving to Missouri, he practiced law and was a member of the Missouri State House of Representatives, (1864-68). He moved to Wakeeney, Kansas, in 1885, practiced law and was appointed by President Harrison as postmaster of Wakeeney, serving (1890-94). He then returned to Missouri and lived in retirement until his death at age 92.
