Born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, he attended Peru State Teachers College, University of Nebraska, (1933-36), graduated from Creighton University School of Law, in 1939 and practiced law in Fairbury, Nebraska. He was special agent for Federal Bureau of Investigation, serving in Washington, D.C., and Chicago, Illinois. During World War II, he served in the 1st Armored Amphibian Battalion, US Marine Corps, remained active in the Marine Corps Reserve and retired a Lieutenant Colonel. After the war, he was resumed practice of law, was Nebraska Jefferson County Attorney and Fairbury City Attorney. In 1967, he was elected as a Republican to the Ninetieth and Ninety-first Congresses, serving until 1971. After his term, he was a appointed United States District Court Judge and served until his death at age 65 in Omaha, Nebraska.
