PO1 Malacarne served on active duty with the United States Navy from September 1942 until August 1948.

He then went on to serve in the Navy Reserves from August 1948 until July 1965. He served on the USS LST 380 (present at the D-Day landing on June 6th, 1944) and the USS LSM 532.

He was awarded the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
