Helen Banister was the daughter of John
Banister and Mary Burton Augusta Bolling of Petersburg, Virginia and the 2nd
wife of Dr. Robert Lewis Madison.

Her husband was a great-nephew of
President James Madison; his grandfather being General William Madison, the
youngest brother of the president. His father Robert Lewis Madison, the senior,
was born on March 4, 1794 in Culpeper County, VA and his mother's maiden name
was Eliza Strachan, of Petersburg, VA.

Her husband was instructor at the
Virginia Military Institute prior to the Civil War, a personal physician to Gen.
Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jacson during the Civil War and an returned to VMI
afterwards. He maintained his home in Staunton, Virginia to be the personal
physician of Gen. Robert E Lee during his final years.

Helen Banister Madison
was the mother of 5 children:

1. Robert Lewis Madison, III who died young

2. Monro Madison, (1862-1887)
3. Marguarite "Maggie" Madison, (1863-1953) who
married Lee Harper.
4. Robert Lee Madison, (1867-1854) the president, and
founder of Western Carolina University
5. Edmund Bolling Madison,
(1870-1948)
