U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to Illinois in 1836 and he later engaged in agricultural pursuits. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1860 and commenced to practice law in Knoxville, Illinois. He served as clerk of the circuit court of Knox County, (1860-64) and was a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives, (1874-75). In 1881, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-seventh Congress, serving until 1883. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until retiring in 1900.
