Veteran of the American Revolution -- Sergeant 1775, Second Lieutenant 1776, First Lieutenant, Jedediah Huntington's regiment 1777. He was later made Captain of the Militia. He was at the sieige of Boston, in the battles of Long Island, White Plains, and Peekskill, and was in camp at Valley Forge. He settled in Colrain,MA after the Revolution.

He was a Congressman during Thomas Jefferson's administration.

He married, first, on Jul 7,1768 at Groton,CT, Hannah Smith.

He married, second, at Greenfield,MA on Sep 4,1814, Phebe Ward.

Children(by first marriage): Russell Avery, Gilbert Avery(whose first wife was Lucy Orcott (Powers) Avery), Hannah Avery Avery, Gilbert Avery, Anna Nancy Avery Miner, Sabra Avery Stoddard(first wife of Vine Stoddard Jr), Thomas Avery Jr, Lucy Avery Denison, Mary Avery Denison, and Samuel Prentice Avery.
