> Pvt, Co C, 51st VA Inf, August 12, 1863, at Liberty Mills *(as Umbarger)

Wounded with grape shot in the left shoulder at the battle of New Market, May 1864; per pension application 10 May 1900.

> Children w/o memorials: from a poem, "Memories", written by his son, Victor, about 1920-25.

"Even my brothers and sisters that live,
In many states have made their home;
And everything would I give
To spend an hour with the ones that are gone.

Four sisters and one brother,
Sleep peacefully beneath the sod,
Beside our Father and Mother.
That have made their peace with God.

Four boys and four girls are left.
Of a family of thirteen in all;
and each one in their hearts bereft
Long for those that answered the call."

** The 4 sisters are: Elizabeth M "Bessie", Edna Mary Mariah, Effie, and a stillborn girl. The brother is: Austin C.
