According to Tradition, in the mid 1700's, two young brothers were deposited on the doorstep of Colonial America. Henry and John Miller came on a ship fraught with sorrow from Germany, many of the passengers died during the weeks spent on the ocean of a cholera epidemic, their parents and family were among the lost. One tradition states that they had a sister who survived but nothing has been found about her. At this point my research on the Miller family is lost as no previous history is known. Henry Miller, the youngest brother is our family progenator. Legend states that he and his brother were raised by friends of the family by the name of Ruffner. It is also told that Henry fought in the Revolution, taking his brother John's place for two months, while John was home making shoes for the family members, Henry lost a finger during his war time experience. Henry was about 15 years old when he substituted for his brother. It is said that Henry was 9 or 10 years old when he migrated with his family from Germany. Henry and John were reared in either Botetourt or Old Fincastle County in Virginia, and lived with a family that migrated with them, by the name of Ruffner. John died a bachelor. Henry had over one hundred grandchildren, this is his story: ~Henry Miller's second marriage was to Barbara Arbaugh in 1796. They lived, farmed, reared their children and paid taxes in Greenbrier County Virginia. He with his sons gathered stones from the fields of Jacob Hockman, which were used to construct a formidable stone house that stood for a century and a half. The rubble of the ediface can still be seen a few miles north of Alderson, West Virginia at a place known as Blakers Mill. Barbara Arbaugh Miller died around 1815. It is said he told his weeping children, "Never thee worry for I will get thee another Barbara". His third marriage was to Barbara Rife. Some time after his second marriage the family was moved to Ohio. After locating on Buffalo Creek, in Symmes township, Lawrence County, Ohio, Henry built his buildings, house, barn, and sheds of hickory trees, and the little run back of his house and springhouse were known as "Hickory House Hollow". Henry Miller is buried in the Yates Cemetery in Symmes Township, Lawrence County Ohio.
