Phyllis passed away May 15, 2003 after a lingering illness, complicated by pneumonia. She was 80 years old. Phyll lost her beloved husband Red in September 2001 and is survived by daughter, Alyson and extended family, Judy Bergman, Linda Dolman and Doris Strock. She was lovingly cared for by Marlena Calva and her family Jose, Ashley and Junior for nearly two years. Phyll's faithful Sheltie, "Robbie" will miss his "Mommy."

Phyll was born in Mankato, Minnesota and graduated from High School there in 1939. After graduating from Secretarial College she began working in the Chemistry Department of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis where she met Red who was attending the University NROTC program.

Phyll and Red married October 20, 1945 and Red immediately began his service to the US Navy. The Navy took Red and Phyll all over the East Coast, allowing them to make many lasting friendships.

Red left the Navy to attend the University of Michigan Law School, graduating in 1952 with Phyll as a strong, supportive and loving companion. She often spoke fondly of the many memories made there. Red rejoined the Navy to fulfill his education commitment and the Navy eventually brought Red and Phyll to San Diego in 1952, where they settled on Point Loma.

Phyll began her life-long love of the ocean while living in Point Loma. She was an active gardener and loved the California climate. She was happiest when she could see, smell and feel the ocean. Red and Phyll were summertime residents of Avalon, Catalina Island for over 25 years until poor health prevented returning to the island.

Phyll loved to cook and spent many happy hours cooking for and entertaining her many friends in San Diego and Avalon. Phyll also loved her Padres from their days in the Pacific Coast League to the present. She never stopped believing! Phyll was an active volunteer and served the auxiliaries of Mercy, Sharp and Alvarado Hospitals for over 30 years, donating thousands of hours of time.

She was also an enthusiastic supporter of the Masonic youth group, Rainbow for Girls, serving as their Mother Advisor in the 80s. Phyll was a 28 year member of La Paloma Star Chapter #96, Order of the Eastern Star. Those whom Phyll loved and who loved her know that she is at last without pain and again filled with joy -- taking in each sunrise on her beloved "Green Pier" and communing with God in her own way. We wish this special lady peace and, at last, contentment.

Services will be held at Fort Rosecrans on May 30, 2003 at 10am with Eastern Star presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Catalina Island Conservancy, in memory of Phyllis Grant, at PO Box 2739, Avalon, Ca 90704, attention Erica Cushing. Phyll would also be happy to have a donation in her name to your favorite charity. Acknowledgements may be sent to Alyson Grant, 2908 Melbourne Dr. San Diego, Ca 92123.
