A great cook, Adelbert took after his mother and enjoyed cooking for his family. He worked as a cook aboard various fishing vessels out of Rockland, Gloucester, and New Bedford. Vinal learned to work as a deck hand while the crews were enjoying his home cooked meals and knew every job on the boats. He also owned his own 28' wood lobster boat, the "Gully Womper" which he fished from Rockport Harbor. Rather than discourage Andre the seal while going out to haul his traps, Vinal allowed Andre aboard his boat keeping him well fed with fish until he returned to port. Vinal also enjoyed recycling old tires making them into floor mats. Musically inclined, Vinal could play the piano, harmonica, accordion, and mandolin, or just about any other instrument. He will be remembered for his self-taught natural and mechanical ability.
Surviving is his wife of 17 years, Barbara Dow of Rockland; three children, Adelbert M. Vinal, Jr. and his wife, Marilyn of Tenants Harbor; David Vinal and his wife Patty of Warren; Darlene Dudley and her husband, Walter of Waldoboro; two step-children, Phyllis Stickney and her fiancé, Kevin Giles of Dracut, MA; Robert Gray of CT; brother, William Vinal and his wife, Leola of Union; sister, Melvenia Foster and her husband, Alton of Thomaston; four grandchildren, Kati Hillgrove; Holly Vinal; Kevin Vinal; and Nicole Harvey; step grandchildren, Alyssa Aziz and Eva Giles; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Wallace and Melvin Vinal.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, November 4, 2010. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family at the Maine Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. Memorial donations may be made to the Winslow Holbrook American Legion, 335 Limerock Street, Rockland, ME 04841. Arrangements are with the Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain Street, Camden.
