FALMOUTH - On Nov. 21, 2008 John Shearson Buffinton, 83, died peacefully at Falmouth by the Sea in Falmouth, Maine. Born on Dec. 18, 1924 in Albany, New York,he was the son of Eliot Buffinton and Janet Shearson Buffinton. For most of his childhood he lived in Bedford and Mt. Kisco, NY. John was a graduate of St. Paul's School where he was a member of the crew. He went on to Yale University to study history but left midway through his studies to serve his country.

After receiving training at Officers' Candidate School he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U. S. Army where he was a Unit Commander, Personnel Officer, and Italian translator. When his active duty was over he returned to Yale and graduated with a BA in History, a proud member of the Class of 1945. A summer spent as a camp counselor in New Hampshire working with city children proved to be a life-changing experience. It was there he realized his true passion, teaching, and went on to pursue his dream at Harvard University where he received a Masters of Education degree. Over the years he taught history at Milton Academy in Milton, MA, Emma Willard School in Troy, NY, and Westfield Public Schools, in Westfield, MA. His time at Milton teaching and coaching hockey was a high point in his life.

John was an avid birdwatcher who contributed his vast knowledge of ornithology to numerous bird counts and taught others the joys of a peaceful walk in the woods with binoculars in hand. He enjoyed many summers with family and birds on the coast of Maine, including North Haven and Prout's Neck. A quiet gentleman of keen intelligence and worldly knowledge, he held a life-long fascination with history, politics, current events, and environmental preservation. His civic activism and interests are shared by his children and grandchildren, in addition to his deep commitment to civil rights and justice.

John is survived by two sisters, June B. Rockefeller and her husband Fred Rockefeller of Bay Pond, NY, and Shirley B. Howe and her husband Pat Howe of Kent, CT; his former wife, Laurie Valentine of Shelburne, VT; his three children, daughter Lee McKim Buffinton of Burlington, VT, and two sons, James Eliot Buffinton of Paris, France, and David Alan Buffinton and his wife Sharon Boardman Buffinton of Scarborough, ME; four grandchildren, Dimitri Stancioff of New York, NY, Lucia Stancioff of Portland, ME, Dylan Buffinton and Clement Buffinton of Paris, France; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
