After receiving training at Officers' Candidate School he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U. S. Army where he was a Unit Commander, Personnel Officer, and Italian translator. When his active duty was over he returned to Yale and graduated with a BA in History, a proud member of the Class of 1945. A summer spent as a camp counselor in New Hampshire working with city children proved to be a life-changing experience. It was there he realized his true passion, teaching, and went on to pursue his dream at Harvard University where he received a Masters of Education degree. Over the years he taught history at Milton Academy in Milton, MA, Emma Willard School in Troy, NY, and Westfield Public Schools, in Westfield, MA. His time at Milton teaching and coaching hockey was a high point in his life.
John was an avid birdwatcher who contributed his vast knowledge of ornithology to numerous bird counts and taught others the joys of a peaceful walk in the woods with binoculars in hand.
