Mr Stoops was born on March 30, 1916 in Xenia, Illinois. He worked for 27 years at International Harvester Trucking in St. Louis as a diesel technician and shift foreman. He established E and R Trailer Park in Caseyville with his wife, enjoyed playing golf and was a Navy World War II Veteran.
Survivors beside his wife of 68 years include three sons, Ronald Stoops and wife Jane of Ozark, Mo., Larry "Steamboat Willie" Stoops of New Orleans and Rev. Rick Stoops and wife Sharon Wetmore Stoops of Augusta; two daughters, Rev. Deanna Willhoite and husband Rev. Jacky Willhoite of Belgrade, Maine, and Rev. Sharon Walston and husband Chuck of Farmington, Maine; 19 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Mr Stoops was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Bessie (Brewer) Stoops; a brother, George Stoops; two sisters, Opal Shehorn and his twin Freida Tackett; and one granddaughter, Stacey Stoops.
Visitation was held 6 to 8 p.m. October 31 at the Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home in Augusta. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 1, at First United Pentecostal Church in Augusta with burial in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.
