STAUNTON — John Calvin Carter Jr., 86, widower of Thelma Genevie "GG" (May) Carter, of Staunton, died Thursday, June 30, 2011.

He was born Jan. 22, 1925, in Clifton Forge, a son of the late John C. Sr. and Maude (Goodwin) Carter.

Prior to retirement Mr. Carter had been employed by Community Motors, Hays Chevrolet and Lamond Oldsmobile-Cadillac as a service manager.

Mr. Carter was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during WWII.

He was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed spending time at his hunting camp in Bath County.

Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his wife on Dec. 2, 1999; a son, Danny L. Carter; and a special friend, Dorothy May.

Family members include a son and two daughters-in-law, J. Edward "Eddie" and Kathy Carter of Churchville and Linda Carter of Quinton; two grandchildren, Donna Carter Morris and John David Carter; a stepgranddaughter, Audrey Brown; four great-grandchildren, Carter Morris, Jake Morris, Chase Carter and Ollie Carter; and his caregiver and neighbor, Martha Rankin.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2011, in Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 5:30 p.m. Sunday, July 3, 2011, at Henry Funeral Home and following his service at 197 Doe Hill Drive, Churchville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 420 Neff Avenue, Suite 210, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
