Jack Walter Dorothy, 75, died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005, while working on his farm west of Keosauqua.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Keosauqua.

The family will meet with friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established memorial funds for the United Methodist Church, the athletic programs of Van Buren High School and missionary work in Haiti.

Mr. Dorothy was born Feb. 7, 1930, in Keosauqua, the son of Robert R. and Mabel E. Burch Dorothy. He married Laurie Jane Sherry June 29, 1951, in Keosauqua.

Mr. Dorothy was a 1948 graduate of Keosauqua High School and served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a minor league umpire in the Longhorn League in Texas. He graduated from Parsons College and earned a master's degree from Western Illinois University of Macomb, Ill. He taught school in Douds, was principal at Fox Valley and Van Buren High Schools and was a longtime coach at all three schools. In 1960, he coached the Douds High School boys and girls basketball teams to the state tournaments.

He was a member of United Methodist Church in Keosauqua and held a perfect Sunday school attendance record for more than 60 years. He was active in Democatic politics all his adult life.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Joan Hodges and husband Mike of Wapello, and Connie Steinbach and husband Mike of Centerville; one son, Robert Dorothy and wife Lyn of Keokuk; and seven grandchildren.

Mr. Dorothy was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Bill Dorothy.
