Gene first married Juanita Higgins, two sons, Eugene "Geno" Louis, Jr. and John F "Jackie", were born to their family. The 1940 Carlyle, Clinton County, Illinois Census has Gene, age 26, divorced, a leather cutter for Moran Shoe Company, living with his parents. Gene later married Emma L Travis, his second wife, and to them were born two sons and a daughter. They were married more than 50 years.

On Gene's WWII Draft Registration of October 16, 1940 he is described as age 27, 5"8", 155 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair.

Gene retired from the Carlyle, Illinois Power Plant. He is a veteran of World War II, serving in the Enewetak Atoll as a member of the United States Navy. He held membership in St Mary's Catholic Church, the Welders Union and Carlyle VFW. He played baseball as a young man and enjoyed watching his grandchildren's sporting events in recent years. Gene passed away in St. Joseph's Hospital at Breese, Illinois. He was the last of his seven siblings, passing away at age 96.

He and his surviving wife Emma L Travis Mueller intend to have their ashes buried together after her passing, at McKendree Cemetery, Keyesport, Illinois.
