J.P. Cox full name was Abram Jefferson Pryor Cox. He enlisted at Jonesville, VA on March 25, 1862 in the 48th Virginia Infantry, Company G, Army of Northern Virginia. This regiment was known as the "Lee County Guards".

He was born at Yoakum Station in Lee Co., VA.

Also, J.P. has another stone - his military marker - at McWright Cemetery in Greenville, Hunt Co., TX, memorial #41973139.
Military marker for J P Cox

It is located next to the grave of Eliza Jane (Stapleton) Cox, second wife of J.P. We are unsure how his military marker ended up there when he's buried elsewhere - and I, myself, just learned of its existence and haven't done any checking as yet. Note that the dates on the military marker are incorrect. My guess would be that when the agency in charge of the markers was starting his, they had consulted family members that they were able to locate, possibly the last residence they had for him was in Greenville. Possibly his children would have (understandably) wanted him to have a marker next to their mother. I'm not sure what year they completed and placed his military marker.

I do know that when his wife Eliza died in 1899, his oldest daughter, Mary "Mollie" helped to raise her younger siblings. Then J.P. died in 1916 - Simpson would have been 29 at that time and Coy Callie only 19. Mary died in 1932.
