The Hon. Alfred H. Hovey, who for many years was identified with leading business interests here, died this morning at half-past seven o'clock at his residence on Church street, after an illness of dysentery lasting but five days. He was not considered in a dangerous condition until Saturday evening last, since which time he has rapidly failed. He was fifty-three years old in February last. The funeral services will take place from the last residence of deceased, on Church street, at its junction with Genesee street, on Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock.
Mr. Hovey was born at Montezuma, Cayuga county, and came to this city to reside in 1834, and was first engaged in business here as a clerk to Mr. B. F. Colvin, Canal Collector. He next took the position of Teller of the Onondaga County Bank, which he held for some years. Subsequently he was extensively engaged in canal forwarding, and was the manager of the "New Oswego Line." He was also a partner in the forwarding house of Crawford and Hovey, at Oswego. He was the third Mayor of this city, to which position he was elected by the Democratic party in 1850. He is the second of the ex-Mayors of this city who have departed this life. Mr. Hovey was the candidate of the Democratic and American parties at several times, for the offices of State Senator and member of the Assembly, but was not elected. He was also strongly urged for the Republican nomination for Canal Commissioner in 1860, and again for appointment to that position by the legislature in the winter of 1861. Mr. Hovey possessed natural abilities of a high order and his business capacity was excellent. He was an earnest and forcible speaker and writer. He has not enjoyed good health for several years, and he fell a quick victim to the insidious disease which caused his death. He was twice married, and his second wife, a daughter of B. Davis Noxon, Esq., and several children, survive him. Mrs. B. F. Colvin is a sister of deceased, and his first wife was a sister of Messrs. Harry, Willett and George Raynor.
For two years past, Mr. Hovey has been connected with the Salina and Geddes street Railways, and at different times has been Superintendent of these roads. In politics, he has acted with Republican and Union parties, since 1859. His death will be lamented by a wide circle of warm personal friends.
